Staying in Town: 5 Things That Will Make Your Summer Stay at College More Exciting

By Brittany Hawes on May 30, 2017

Whether it be those sometimes all-too-necessary summer classes, a lease that turned out to be a little bit longer than you actually needed it to be, or some other compelling reason, you have found yourself needing to stay in your college’s city/town for the summer.

In these instances, you might find that many of the friends you made during the year, and a vast majority of the students that regularly hang out on campus, are going to be missing for the next three or so months of your life. Living in Tallahassee, this also means that half of the population will seem to have vacated the premises, leaving the city to feel almost as desolate as a set from AMC’s The Walking Dead (totally kidding.… Yep.). So what’s a college student to do when spring semester is over and many of your friends have left?

Believe it or not, even if half of the businesses in your area have stopped advertising college specials and trying as hard to appeal to the college crowd, there’s still plenty of fun things to do to fill your schedule and maybe even pick up a couple of cool new skills while you’re at it.

1. Try Out a Non-Academic Class or Interest Group

Maybe you didn’t have time for it during the fall or spring semesters. But now that summer is here, you probably have a little more time on your hands than usual. You might find your thoughts drifting back to those flyers you saw around campus that advertised interesting meet-ups for local artists and hopeful poets.

Now is the perfect time to look into those sorts of classes. Not only will you be building your skills, you’ll also have the opportunity to meet new people! If you have a hobby or talent that you want to further explore, start browsing online for specific classes that will help. Some are even offered for free!  Remember: stay open and don’t be afraid to give new things a shot! You never know what you’re going to be good at until you try it out!

2. Explore Summer Job Opportunities

There’s no time like summertime to start saving money towards next semester’s expenses! You already know by this time just how expensive college can be, so why not look into getting a part-time or full-time job this summer to give you a bit of a buffer? Being employed can serve as both a way to keep busy and also a way to build on that all-too-important resume.

To get started on your job search, try out Indeed.com. There, you’ll be able to customize your search options in order to narrow down job listings based on your interests, distance from home, and desired pay.

3. Seek Out an Awesome Internship

Internships are a worthwhile and exciting way in which to learn new skills, meet new people, and gain experience in the field of work in which you plan on working in the future. There are plenty of websites where you can browse internship listings. Try www.internships.com and www.fastweb.com for hundreds of internship opportunities that you can apply for immediately.

Businesses that are just starting out and even huge companies, like Electronic Arts and NASA, post internship positions on these websites. With just a couple of clicks, you could be signed up to work in the company of your dreams! There are often internship opportunities available through your college’s career website as well!

4. Plan a Vacation

Take a few days off from work (if possible), call up your friends from school, and plan a weekend out! Pack up your swimsuits and head off to the beach, do an extended sleepover at a friend’s, or head anywhere that you consider fun and take a weekend to simply relax and enjoy yourself.

5. Check Out Local Events

As tempting as it might be to stay home and binge-watch Netflix, chances are there are plenty of things to do around town. If your college is anything like Florida State, there are still events happening on campus this summer. Check out your school’s website and search for their calendar of events for a list of activities that you can pick and choose from. You can also try your city’s official website and look for events happening around town that might be just what you’re looking for.

A summer in town is definitely an experience and it’s one that you have to make! Above all else, remember: it’s summer! Enjoy yourself! Happy summer, everyone!
